Dr. Rinsland has over 20 years of experience in the conduct of research in atmospheric physics, molecular spectroscopy, and astrophysics and has written over 200 peer-reviewed publications. At the College of William and Mary and since joining the research staff at NASA Langley Research Center in May 1983, he has concentrated on quantitative analysis of high resolution IR solar spectra recorded with Fourier transform spectrometers. He analyzed Spacelab 3 and ATLAS shuttle flight infrared solar spectra for molecular trace gases, temperature, aerosol, and cloud extinction profiles. His work included the identification and analysis of continuum absorption by N2 and CO2 in the 2400 cm-1 region, and COF2, and SF6. On a per molecule basis, SF6 has one of the highest known greenhouse gas warming coefficients and a long lifetime. He developed the SFIT and SFIT2 algorithms, widely used for retrievals of atmospheric vertical profiles from ground-based infrared solar spectra. He analyzed 1950 and 1951 solar spectra from the Jungfraujoch station in Switzerland and compared them with recent solar spectra to show long-term increases in CO and CH4. He identified HCN in the non-urban troposphere from ground-based solar spectra and later reported studies that show it is an important tracer of biomass burning emissions readily measured from both ground-based and space-based high resolution infrared spectra and showed it is an important long-lived emission product from biomass burning. He is a member of the TES and ACE science teams.

Dr. Rinsland received the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal for pioneering new scientific results using data from the four ATMOS shuttle flights between 1985 and 1994.
