Mark Shephard has 10 years experience in satellite remote sensing and radiative transfer, and has authored and co-authored over 25 peer- reviewed publications. His recent research efforts have been focused on tasks for NASA’s Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) through his direct involvement in the TES Science Team and Algorithm Working Group. This research includes improving and validating the physical retrieval of atmospheric pollutants (i.e. tropospheric ozone) from passive remote sensors, and the further development of AER’s radiative transfer models, such as Line-By-Line Radiative Transfer Model (LBLRTM). He has also worked on the National Polar-Orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) project. His main responsibilities include the development and analysis of many algorithms and sensor design specifications for satellite infrared retrievals (i.e. Active Fire products). In addition to passive remote sensing, he has experience with active remote sensing of the atmosphere for cloud and pollution research. He also received a NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Award in 2005 for his involvement in the NASA Aura project.
