Level 2 Products
In general, TES Level 2 data contain retrieved species (or temperature) profiles at the observation targets and the estimated errors. The geolocation, quality and some other data (e.g., surface characteristics for nadir observations) are also provided.

NOTE: Those looking to use standard Level 2 TES data products are advised to use the TES Lite Products that are reduced size products in netCDF format, providing L2 data organized by month.
L2 modeled spectra are evaluated using radiative transfer modeling algorithms. The process, referred to as retrieval, compares observed spectra to the modeled spectra and iteratively updates the atmospheric parameters.
L2 standard product files include information for one molecular species (or temperature) for an entire global survey or special observation run. A global survey consists of a maximum of 16 consecutive orbits. Nadir and limb observations are in separate L2 files, and a single ancillary file is composed of data that are common to both nadir and limb files.
The most recent version of publicly available TES Level 2 data is Version 8. Additional information is available in the Data Quality Description Document for V8, and the Level 2 Versioning Guide.

Filenames
The filename for a L2 standard product is constructed using the following template:
TES-Aura_L2-species-view_rrun id_version id.he5
TES-Aura_L2-species-view_rrun id_calibration designator_version id.he5
- species refers to which molecule or temperature the file uses
- view determines whether the file uses the Nadir or Limb view
- run id represents the ten-digit run identification number
- version id represents the version identification number, which is used to keep track of file format changes.
where:
F = File Format placeholder
ff = 2-digit version number reflecting file Format changes
cc = 2-digit version number reflecting file Content changes - calibration designator: The filename with calibration designator is applicable for all global surveys with run IDs greater than or equal to 11125 and special observations with run IDs greater than or equal to 11189.
- .he5 extension denotes the use of HDF-EOS 5 format
